Hydrogen Inhalation vs. Hydrogen-Rich Water (HRW) for Gut Health
This week, let’s get an in-depth view of the difference in how hydrogen acts differently when inhaled vs. drinking hydrogen dissolved in water or hydrogen-rich water (HRW).

In the above image, we can see hydrogen water is being prepared by bubbling pure H2 gas in drinking water. In natural conditions (atmospheric pressure with no chemical reactions involving anything other than hydrogen and water), pure hydrogen dissolves at 0.25 - 1.6 ppm in water. Hydrogen tablets while claim to provide higher concentrations of H2 involve chemical reactions and we don’t use such products due to the risks involved in the manufacturing processes.
Comparing naturally produced hydrogen water to inhaling 225 ml to 2 liters of hydrogen per minute, one can see there’s stark difference in the amount of bio-available hydrogen. However, HRW has some unique effects as you will learn below, so we prefer to use both together, hydrogen inhalation + HRW.
In a recent study, scientists compared the effects of long-term hydrogen water and hydrogen inhalation on gut microbiome, body weight and plasma metabolites. Plasma metabolites provide information about metabolic and energy states, nutritional status, and other biochemical processes.
The results of this study showed markedly decrease in body weight by hydrogen inhalation, while no obvious effect is observed with HRW. However they did find superior effects with hydrogen water for gut microbiota. Many kinds of diseases, especially gastrointestinal symptoms, such as constipation and diarrhea, could benefit from hydrogen water.
Another study, looked at the body weight and serum biochemical parameters were monitored during the six-month hydrogen intervention. Serum biochemical parameters are chemical analyses of the liquid component of blood that remains after cells and clotting factors have been removed. These parameters include substances such as proteins, enzymes, lipids, and hormones, which provide information about the body’s organs and tissues, as well as the metabolic state of the organism.
The study found that most of the parameters, such as body weight, uric acid, serum triglycerides, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase (HDB), creatine kinase (CK) and its isoenzyme creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), are much more significant in hydrogen inhalation than HRW, only the changes in serum total bile acid (TBA) are more evident in HRW group.
To put it simple words, hydrogen water improves gut health by increasing the number of healthy or good bacteria. Hydrogen inhalation on the other hand, affects the entire body including the gut bacteria. However, hydrogen gas affects gut microbes differently and doesn’t have all the benefits as hydrogen water for the gut.
Therefore, it is recommended to have hydrogen water after hydrogen inhalation, to clean up and improve metabolism and finally improve the gut microbiota with the HRW.
Hydrogen inhalation provides higher hydrogen concentration in blood and organ tissues and maintains concentration for a longer period, which may partly contribute to the greater impact.
