This week air pollution has been on the top of my mind, mainly due to the news of the New Jersey wildfires. Forecast maps show the smoke that is now billowing across South Jersey could also blow into the New York City area in the coming days. New York City has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Thursday. An Air Quality Action Day for Particulate Matter (PM2.5) was declared for Wednesday, April 23rd. Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young were recommended to limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors.
PM is the major pollutant during haze episodes. Evidence showed that PM, especially PM2.5, seriously affected human health. Based on the data from Lim et al. (2012), around 3.2 million people died in 2010 due to exposure to PM. PM mainly led to diseases related to both respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Fine PM such as PM1.0 and PM2.5 penetrate deeply into the lung, irritate and corrode the alveolar wall and, as a result, affect lung functions. Scientists in Canada and the US found that long-term exposure to PM2.5 significantly increased not only the chances of cardiopulmonary problems but also the mortality of lung cancers. Relative risks of lung cancer mortality ranged from 1.08 to 1.60 for 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure. Besides the current wildfire situation, dry air has the ability to worsen a wide range of health issues, from respiratory conditions and skin problems to nosebleeds, dry eyes, sore throat, etc.
Indoor air quality is bad now for most urban dwellers anyways. The rate at which people are using home appliances such as air conditioners is high nowadays. While these smart devices are useful in a number of ways, they can equally have negative effects. For instance, forced cooling and heating systems will circulate bacteria and dust particles in the house.
Other dirt such as fur from pets and outdoor allergens will find their way into a closed environment leading to a high concentration of contaminants in the house. Based on this scenario, it is evident that the air we breathe indoors is filled with numerous contaminants that may include deadly viruses and bacteria.
So how can we protect ourselves? It is recommended that you disinfect closed environments that you use regularly and also take care of your body to get rid of the toxins. Hydrogen Inhalation Improves Lung Function and Protects from Pollution
In 2016, scientists from Hebei Medical University, China conducted an randomized clinical trial to study the protective effects of hydrogen inhalation on lungs of sanitation workers exposed to haze or pollution from medical waste and air pollution. They concluded that inhalation of hydrogen gas can reduce airway inflammation and oxidative stress as well as improve respiratory symptoms such as cough.
In another clinical trial, 3000 ml/min (3 L/min) hydrogen/oxygen therapy was used to control tumor progression and reduce the side-effects from medications in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. It was concluded that hydrogen inhalation can significantly benefit such patients and can be combined with chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy to improve the outcomes.
