I hope your week was fruitful and the weekend is nourishing. As the seasons change and temperature gradients take effect, the body needs calibration. I feel that this time allows me to make changes in daily habits and routines. I find that doing meditation, Pranayama/breathwork, Yoga, Qi Gong, etc. really has a greater effect during this time. These practices attune the body with the environment and bring vital life force to the body’s energy system. Maybe it’s just me though.. I’d love to hear of your experiences in this regard!
These ancient systems of exercise medicine can be very effective in healing the body. I also find that these practices open up your senses and make you feel great mentally. The opening of the senses presents a unique opportunity to develop self-control and concentration.
According to Vedic science, the five senses – smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing – are a “living being”. With body, mind, ego, the intellect and principle of consciousness, the five great elements – earth, water, fire, air and space – are the living being known in the scriptures as Pancha (five) Maha Bhuthas (Great Being).
Similarly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Five Elements Theory has - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe between which interactions occur. The five elements are connected to seasons, body organs, senses and fluids. Treatments, diets and exercises can then be prescribed in a more organized manner and to make the maximum use of environmental factors in human physiology. The table below shows the connections:
As we are in fall (northern hemisphere) and spring (southern hemisphere), we can certainly note that increase in activity in the connected areas.
The ears are probably the second most complex sensory organ of perception; the eyes being the first. We acquire most of our knowledge through listening. The ears play a very important role in achieving our sense of balance. Further, we have to listen to the sound of our breaths if doing any sort of meditation or breathwork.
I’ve been experimenting with Pranayama and hydrogen inhalation in combination for aerating the ears. Gently in every step, breathe in with H2, close the nostrils with fingers and aerate/blow the ears. Finally, remove the H2 line and exhale the remaining breath through the nostrils.
However, before doing this I do ensure that my sinuses are clear and I’m breathing normally. The ears are usually the last one in pranayama exercise session. It does take time to build the practice before experiencing its results and having your body/mind/spirit in equilibrium.
Not having excess mucus is paramount for the senses to be sharp. To clear sinuses of the gunk more easily, other breathing exercises can be applied - walking 4K might help too. Hydrogen, PEMF, Nasal PBMT can also be applied for boosting recovery time quickly. One can also even start with thee therapies first and then visit exercise when feeling sufficiently in shape to start.
