This week, I wanted to share some papers on cancer and you can see just how relevant PEMF and H2 are, not just for cancer but some of the other most prevalent conditions as well. You’ll see the role of mitochondrial function in health and disease and then can appreciate what H2 and PEMF can do.
Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body. According to research, cancer cells cannot thrive in oxygen-enriched environments. Damaged mitochondria is one of the key reasons of developing cancer as researched by Nobel prize winner, Otto Warburg back in 1931. This theory has stood the test of time.
It now established even by researchers at Harvard Medical that, “in order to effectively treat cancer, the escape routes to therapeutic interventions provided by mitochondria must also be considered – future studies into combination therapies that remove this flexibility will be important to advance cancer treatments.”
ATP as seen in the above diagram is the energy (bioenergetic) utilized by the cells to recharge and regenerate. Mitochondrial dysfunction results in decreased oxidative capacity and increased oxidative damage, contributes substantially to biological aging and disease. Cancer cells differ from normal cells in many ways. For instance, cancer cells grow in the absence of signals telling them to grow. Normal cells only grow when they receive such signals. So mitochondrial function must be kept intact.
According to this study conducted by the University of Colorado, mitochondrial dysfunction as well as disruptions of cellular bioenergetics have been shown to be ubiquitous in some of the most prevalent diseases in our society, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Digging in to the following two technologies and their research should leave no doubt in your mind, that these can be effective and can prevent a myriad of mitochondrial mishaps and help you live longer and stronger.
Hydrogen and OxyHydrogen Inhalation
In 2007, a milestone publication in Nature Medicine by Japanese scientist, Ohsawa which reported that molecular hydrogen is a novel selective antioxidant. Together with its biological safety that had been well acknowledged in diving medicine, a bright prospect of molecular hydrogen was brought into research and possible clinical application. Remission of symptoms was observed after hydrogen treatment in a variety of conditions including ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, metabolic syndromes and inflammation. Promising results were also obtained from preliminary clinical trials on arthritis, diabetes-related disorders, periodontitis, etc.
Inhalation of molecular hydrogen (H2) gas was also found to reduce oxidative stress-induced acute injuries in the brain. Consumption of H2 infused water also prevents chronic neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson's disease in animal and clinical studies. H2 increases the mitochondrial membrane potential and the cellular ATP level, which are accompanied increased glutathione and superoxide levels. Hydrogen increases the expression of anti-oxidative enzymes underlying the Nrf2 pathway thereby improving the resistance to exacerbated oxidative stress.

Pulsed Electromagnetic field therapy
Most cells in the body including those of blood, muscle, ligaments, bone, and cartilage have all been shown to respond to bioelectromagnetic fields. Bioelectricity plays an important role in normal development, wound healing, and regeneration. Following injury, the bioelectric field changes, and various membrane ion channels and pumps become involved in wound healing.
PEMF can induce electroporation or increase cell membrane permeability to ions and macromolecules at the cellular level.
PEMF shows promise as an anti-inflammatory treatment and for promoting tissue regeneration by modulating the expression of various cellular information processing networks and signaling pathways and restoring them to homeostatic healthy production levels.
Several peer-reviewed studies show that PEMFs stimulate cell mitochondria, subsequently resulting in enhanced cell respiration / oxidative phosphorylation including the Krebs cycle or citric acid cycle whereby increased enzyme levels are known to be associated with improved oxygen metabolism with less oxidative waste, known as reactive oxygen species (ROS). PEMFs induce human cryptochrome to modulate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).
As we can see, both Hydrogen and PEMF are regenerative technologies and the clinical research shows that they are increasingly being used to treat chronic pain and inflammation as well as improve the body’s natural ability to rejuvenate and recover from a host of disorders. PEMF therapy research for Cancer
PEMF therapy has been researched for various cancer types for skin, breast, prostate, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, bladder, thyroid, and colon cancer - in vitro and in vivo.
